How Japanese Dogs Bark

ワンワン (wanwan) is the Japanese sound for a dog’s bark — the equivalent of English “woof woof” or “bow wow”. While English speakers might describe a small dog as going “yip yip” and a big dog as “ruff ruff”, Japanese collapses all of it into one cheerful word: ワンワン. The single bark “ワン!” (wan!) is also extremely common.

ワンワン belongs to the giseigo (擬声語) category, which captures voiced sounds made by living creatures — animals, babies, people. Japanese has five types of onomatopoeia, and giseigo specifically deals with the actual vocal sounds animals and humans produce.

When to Use ワンワン

Use ワンワン to describe any dog barking — large or small, friendly or angry. The most common pattern is 「犬がワンワン吠える」(inu ga wanwan hoeru, “the dog goes woof woof”). Importantly, Japanese toddlers use ワンワン as the word for dog itself — much like English-speaking kids might say “doggy”. So if a Japanese child points and shouts 「ワンワン!」, they mean “Look, a dog!”

Fun Fact

In Japan, dogs say ワンワン, but cats say ニャー (nyaa), cows say モーモー (moomoo), and frogs say ケロケロ (kerokero). Each animal has its own beloved sound. The single 「ワン!」is also used as cute internet slang — Japanese fans sometimes write it after sentences to give themselves a playful “puppy” persona, similar to how English speakers might add “uwu” or “rawr”.
