The Feel of Stickiness

べたべた (betabeta) describes a sticky, tacky surface — hands coated in melted candy, a table smeared with something gooey, or skin that’s clammy with sweat on a humid day. Anything that clings to your fingers and won’t brush off cleanly is べたべた.

べたべた belongs to the gitaigo (擬態語) category, describing a physical state rather than a sound. It has a second, figurative use too: a couple who are physically all over each other are described as べたべた — clingy in an affectionate, slightly excessive way.

When to Use べたべた

For texture, use 「べたべたする」 (to be sticky) — hands, sweat, spilled syrup, fresh paint. For relationships, 「べたべたする」 means to be clingy and overly affectionate. The contrast word is さらさら (sarasara), which is dry, smooth, and clean — the exact opposite of that uncomfortable sticky feeling.

べたべた also describes plastering things everywhere: 「ステッカーをべたべた貼る」 means to stick stickers all over a surface. And in casual speech, calling humor ベタ (beta) — clipped from べたべた — means a joke is corny or predictable, the comedy equivalent of something cheaply stuck on.
