The Sound of Held-Back Laughter

クスクス (kusukusu) is the quiet, private giggle you make when something is funny but you shouldn’t laugh out loud — at a formal meeting, in class, at a theater, when gossip shouldn’t be overheard. It’s the laughter that leaks out between fingers pressed to the mouth, shoulders shaking just a little. Unlike the bold ハハハ (hahaha, a hearty laugh), クスクス is contained, mischievous, often shared between two or three people who are in on a joke.

クスクス belongs to the giseigo (擬声語) category — onomatopoeia for voiced sounds made by humans and animals. Japanese has five types of onomatopoeia, and giseigo specifically captures the actual vocal noises people and creatures produce.

When to Use クスクス

Use クスクス when describing soft, suppressed laughter — especially laughter that is slightly mischievous, conspiratorial, or inappropriate for the setting. The most common patterns are 「クスクス笑う」(kusukusu warau, “to giggle”) and 「クスクスする」(kusukusu suru, “to chuckle”). It’s almost always associated with women or girls in anime and literature, though men can use it too. For open, booming laughter, use ワハハ (wahaha) or ゲラゲラ (geragera); for a sneering, mocking chuckle, use ニヤニヤ (niyaniya).

Fun Fact

In Japanese fiction, クスクス is a classic character-establishing detail for refined, composed women — a duchess hiding amusement behind a fan, a high-school girl exchanging whispered jokes with her best friend during a boring lesson. The sound is considered feminine and elegant in Japanese, in contrast to louder laughter tropes. Coincidentally, クスクス is also the Japanese name for the North African dish couscous — completely unrelated, but it does occasionally cause confused moments in recipe books and travel writing.
