Not Quite English — a Japanese Shopping Philosophy

In English, “cost performance” is a technical term. You’ll find it in reviews of CPUs, servers, or industrial machines — a dry engineering metric. Nobody at a dinner table says, “Wow, great cost performance on this pizza.” They say “great value,” “bang for your buck,” or “totally worth it.”

In Japan, though, コストパフォーマンス — and especially its clipped form コスパ — is one of the most-used consumer words of the 21st century. A ramen bowl has コスパ. A smartphone has コスパ. A two-hour movie has コスパ. Even a date can be graded on コスパ (please don’t say this out loud).

コスパがいい / コスパが悪い

The word travels almost exclusively in two ready-made phrases:

• コスパがいい → “good value for money.” The shop is cheap and the food is tasty.
• コスパが悪い → “bad value for money.” The drink cost ¥1,500 and came in a thimble.

You’ll hear it applied to almost anything: a used car, a gym membership, a university degree, a vacation. Reviews on Japanese sites like Tabelog, Kakaku.com, and @cosme are saturated with the term. For English learners, the trap is obvious — saying “this restaurant has good cost performance” in English sounds like a robot wrote it. The natural translation is “great value.”

Enter タイパ, スペパ, and ネタパ

Because コスパ was such a hit, Japanese coined a whole family of spin-offs:

• タイパ (time performance) → time-efficiency. Named one of the 2022 buzzwords of the year. Is this activity worth my time?
• スペパ (space performance) → space-efficiency. Key in cramped Tokyo apartments: does this sofa earn its floor space?
• ネタパ (content performance) → entertainment-value per yen. How much stuff does this theme park / subscription / manga give me?

None of these are real English. “Time-pa” would baffle a New Yorker. But together they form a distinctly modern Japanese worldview — one where every purchase and every hour gets quietly audited.

Why Japan Loves コスパ

Three decades of deflation, stagnant wages, and a shrinking middle class made value-hunting a national sport. Add the SNS review economy — where every ¥800 lunch gets photographed and graded — and you get a culture where comparing コスパ is practically a civic duty.

Nowhere is this more visible than in Gen Z’s タイパ revolution: watching movies at 1.5× or 2× speed, reading book summaries instead of books, skipping anime opening credits. Critics call it shallow; fans call it optimization. Either way, it’s a direct descendant of the コスパ mindset — applied to time instead of money.

タイパ (time performance) was named a Top-10 Buzzword of the Year in 2022 by Japan’s Shingo-Ryūkōgo Taishō awards. It was coined by media researcher Yukiko Inamasu to describe Gen Z’s speed-watching habits. Within a year, “タイパがいい” had spread far beyond entertainment — used for choosing restaurants, study methods, even dating apps. The コスパ family tree keeps growing.
